Red Cross Classes

All Indianola Wellness Campus-hosted lifeguard classes are using the American Red Cross Blended Learning program.

Blended learning combines online learning with an in-person skills session where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency.
This is a blended learning course. You must present printed or electronic proof of completion of the online course to attend the class. The online course takes approximately 7 hours.

You must be able to complete the following physical prerequisite skills on the first day of class: prerequisite skills on the first day of class:
1. Swim 150 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination.
2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, candidates will cross their arms, and then continue with a 50 yard swim.
3. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using only front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands on the object, head at or near the surface and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
It is recommended you read the current American Red Cross manual prior to attending the course.

Already certified? Lifeguard certifications are valid for 2 years. To maintain your certification you must take a lifeguard review course no later than 30 days after your expiration date. After 30 days you will need to take the full certification course to be eligible to work as a lifeguard. Lifeguard review
participants must meet the physical prerequisite skills listed above.

Red Cross Full LGI Class

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) course prepares experienced lifeguards to teach and certify others in Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid programs. This instructor-level training focuses on mastering course content, understanding how to effectively present skills and knowledge, and learning how to evaluate and coach lifeguard candidates to Red Cross standards. Participants will review advanced rescue skills, surveillance and scanning, emergency response protocols, and legal and professional responsibilities, all while practicing instructional techniques in a supportive, hands-on environment.

 

By the end of the course, successful candidates will be authorized to teach American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses at aquatic facilities, camps, and community programs. The class emphasizes professionalism, leadership, risk management, and clear communication—key skills for anyone looking to take the next step in aquatic leadership. This course is ideal for current lifeguards who want to expand their impact, mentor others, and help maintain high safety standards in aquatic programs.

Must hold a current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes are designed to teach you not only the basics in water safety but also the proper protocol when dealing with any emergencies around water. The Red Cross blends both traditional lecture style along with crucial hands-on training in order to teach you effective techniques to deliver prompt care to those in need. Learn how to respond safely and efficiently to water emergencies with lifeguard classes from the American Red Cross.

Program fees are non-refundable.

Class times are:

Saturday & Sunday 8am-2pm

All 4 days must be attended.

This class is for guards who need to renew their current certifications.  If more than 30 days have passed since your certification expired, you must take the full certification class.

Credits will not be given in the event you are unable to complete the prerequisites, you do not successfully pass the course, or you fail to unregister prior to the first day of the course.

Earn your certification to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety, and gain the skills needed to teach courses and make presentations to swimmers of every age and ability. Through our Aquatic Instructor Training program, you can help recreational swimmers meet their goals, refine their skills and stay safe in, on, and around water.

Water Safety Instructor®

The Water Safety Instructor, also known as WSI™, course trains instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all age groups; all of the courses listed above, plus Learn-to-Swim Levels 4-6 and Adult Swim. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors.

What You’ll Learn

During our swim instructor certification training courses you’ll learn how to help individuals enjoy their time in the water safely – and in a wide range of ways. Throughout the courses we’ll focus on a number of key areas that can help you succeed as aquatics instructor, such as:

  • Water safety at public pools, homes, natural bodies of water and more, including the Circle of Drowning Prevention and Chain of Drowning Survival.
  • Hydrodynamics, including why some things float, resistance to movement and creating movement in water, swimming efficiency and laws of levers.
  • Basic safety, survival and swimming skills to help children gain water competency.
  • Helping people with disabilities and other health conditions enjoy the water safely.

Water Safety Instructors will also learn how to teach:

  • Higher-level swim skills that help prepare people of all ages for any aquatic activity.
  • Stroke mechanics for all competitive strokes as well as starts, turns and headfirst entries.
  • Water safety certification courses, including Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.
  • Fundamentals of diving from a diving board.
  • Aquatic fitness and training for people of any age.
